Internal Disputes in Morena Party and its Allies

Despite federal confirmation of the alliance, tensions between Morena, the Green Party ('tucán'), and the PT persist at the local level. Disagreements over the 2027 elections and electoral reform threaten the unity of the ruling Fourth Transformation coalition.

Internal Disputes in Morena Party and its Allies

An ecological party source told LPO that the ratification was at the federal level and with 'the Doctor,' with whom everything is fine, but locally it is not guaranteed. They also warned that the agreement signed in Mexico City does not imply support for the electoral reform promoted by Claudia Sheinbaum. Meanwhile, in the 'tucán' party (Ecologist Green Party of Mexico), they still badly remember the 'tucán's' refusal to vote on a point of agreement to investigate alleged links between the Generation Z's mobilizations and the national leader of the PRI, Alito Moreno. On the other hand, the scenario for the PT party is different. For example, a federal deputy from Morena recounted to LPO that in San Luis Potosí, the 'guinda' party (Morena's color) is already conducting polls without an alliance, anticipating a probable division between the two parties. In the state governed by Ricardo Gallardo, it is not the only source of discord. 'We don't even have our own street sweeper or dialogue with Morena,' declared a national capital ecological source in conversation with LPO, who promotes breaking the alliance so that the 'tucán' can compete with nearly 100 of its own candidates: 16 for mayoralties, 66 for the Palace of Donceles, and 33 for the federal Congress. Furthermore, the negative move made by Morena at the end of the year, through which they removed four deputies from their caucus, who were loaned at the beginning of the current Legislature, still persists negatively in the capital's Green party. Thus, the national ecological leadership is enabling different moves and strategies in the 17 states that will be at stake in 2027, and for which there are already serious disputes between Morena, the Greens, and the PT. Moreover, it has already competed alone in the Veracruz municipal elections—which also did not generate the best repercussions for the 4T—and in Mexico City, it governs the Xochimilco mayorship with Circe Camacho. In this way, despite the attempts of the Morena leadership to reduce tensions and begin to outline the scenario for the 2027 elections and strengthen Claudia Sheinbaum's government, internal differences persist and their consequences are, for now, unpredictable. As reported by LPO, the Greens have already raised figures in Querétaro, Tamaulipas, Quintana Roo, Guerrero, and Zacatecas, among other federal entities. As the Green party maintains its criticisms of the electoral reform promoted by Sheinbaum, the party's leader, Alberto Anaya, has already held a series of meetings with the Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, and has toned down his statements. This week, the president of Morena, Luisa María Alcalde, signed a joint declaration with the leader of the PT, Alberto Anaya, and the national leader of the Greens, Karen Castrejón, through which they reaffirmed the 4T alliance and support for the head of state, Claudia Sheinbaum. In any case, according to various sources from the 'tucán' party, the agreement does not cover local issues and disputes, so differences over governorships will persist for the 2027 elections. This editorial had already anticipated that the local command is analyzing competing alone, and according to various sources consulted, this position has not changed recently, even with Luisa María Alcalde's recent declaration. Mexico City is no exception. Thus, the signal of unity and coercion that the 4T tried to launch amid tensions with its allies is once again cracking and threatens the coalitions that could be formed for next year's elections. Without definitions on the electoral reform, the 4T reaffirmed its alliance. In this context, the 'tucán' anticipates that the agreement does not involve the mayoralties, municipalities, or local congresses to be elected in 2027. 'We already said no to that, and that has not changed,' added the same source. 'In Mexico City, everything is bad.' 'We need our own candidacies to grow,' they say in the chilango (Mexico City) 'tucán.' 'The ratification was at the federal level and with the Doctor, with whom everything is fine, but locally it is not secured,' the same person stated. 'Each one will move according to how we have been treated during this time,' held the same individual.
